Mitsutaya 满田屋

Mitsutaya is a miso specialty store founded at the end of Edo period, which is around 1835. They serve this Aizu’s local delicacies “Miso Dengaku” whereby ingredients such as mochi, tofu, konjac are skewed and miso glazed, and then grilled over the charcoal fire.

Besides that, they offer a variety of products such as miso, miso dressing, misozuke (miso pickles), Aizu grown perilla dressing sauce, rapeseed oil, and local Aizu produces which work great as omiyage (souvenirs).

Miso Dengaku Set, priced at ¥1,850 (inclusive tax) comes with 6 dishes Mochi, Fried Tofu, Konjac, Taro Potato, Shingorou (half mashed rice cake), and Smoked Herring. All are made with a coat of in-house’s miso and have the dengaku skewers grilled over the charcoal fire.

Each ingredients is coated with different miso flavour such as sweet miso, sansho miso, yuzu lemon miso! We were not a fan of Konjac and we’d thought of ordering a la carte but the staff was kind enough to exchange the konjac (in the set) for mochi to us! Yay! A la carte order is priced at ¥330 (inclusive tax) per dish/ skewer.

As the miso dengaku took its time on the grill, we helped ourselves with the self-service tea at the corner and strolled around the shop for what to buy home (Yes, I carted out some miso and salad dressings). It smelled so great inside the restaurant; filled with the aroma of the heated miso and flickers of charcoal fire.

We love the sticky chewiness of warm Mochi and fluffy Taro along with the Sweet Miso; savoury Fried Tofu with Sansho Miso and the aromatic rice scent from the Shingorou with Egoma Miso. Very yummy. While smoked herring with the sansho miso tasted good too but we were not a fan of the herring. How we wished we still have some stomach space for more of their dishes (cheese miso bun and seaweed mochi), we were pretty full from the full load lunch. Do head over to check out the miso dengaku if you are travelling to Aizu Wakamatsu. Each small dish here is coated in miso for an unforgettable and savoury flavour!
