KENJI Japanese Restaurant @ Medan Damansara, KL
KENJI Japanese Restaurant
Sharing the same row with Tiki Taka and Vintry in the quieter neighbourhood at Jalan Kasah, KENJI Japanese Restaurant
is a hidden gem that offers authentic Japanese dining experience.
The background behind this restaurant is quite interesting as they own a tuna processing factory in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. Hence, what they serve here is all at top notch quality, the freshest ingredients air flown directly from Japan.
I got to know about this place from WeiZhi and we have been planning to go together but that day seems to take forever to come, due to our unmatched schedule. So, I made my way alone to Kenji Japanese Restaurant one day to have their Negitoro Don (I was craving for it). After that day, I was hooked with this place. I was here almost every week to check out the other dishes they offer.
The lunch sets KENJI offers are indeed super value for money with high cospa (cost performance) value. Another plus point, hot or cold tea is on the house too! So, here is my compilation of the few visits on their lunch menu!
And I must say dining inside here literally transport me back to Japan!
Here is Chef Takaku.
First thing first, a glass of House Sake (Rm 20) every time I come here. Takashimizu from Akita, pairs really well with all the items I had over here!
Miyagi Bluefin Tuna Ootoro Negitoro (Rm 38)
On a bed of fluffy chewy pearl rice, chef generously loaded in A LOT of chopped ootoro and garnished with salmon chopped negi (spring onion). With a light dash of soy sauce given at the side, it was amazingly good. Fine, creamy, rich combination and some popping happiness salmon roe at the end. It was so good!
I have got my craving satisfied. If you have tried it out yourself, you would know how generous chef is! That was a mountain high of chopped ootoro! Seriously the best negitoro don I come across in KL!
The rice comes with a miso soup and you can choose your rice portion in small, medium or large according to your stomach capacity.
Tempura Rice Bowl (Rm 35)
On my second visit, I came in for this as I was craving for it! A glorious bowl of Tempura don with pumpkin, capsicum, mushroom, eggplant, and shrimp; all lightly coated in a thin crispy batter, comes with a nice crunch and non-greasy at all. The deep fried items were served on a bed of rice with a drizzle of sweet unagi sauce too. Sooooo good! It was really best tempura/ tempura I have come across. I am not exaggerating ya, they really serve the best tempura in the city.
Mackerel Grill (Rm 38)
Mackerel fillet or saba; grilled to perfection with a light crust on the outer layer but inside, rich with its fats and very succulent. Honestly, I have not come across fatty saba like this one. It was so fatty and so creamy!
The set comes with a chawanmushi, miso soup and your size of rice.
Japan Fried Chicken (Rm 28)
The chicken pieces was very well marinated in a blend of soy sauce, ginger and garlic; deep fried into perfection, lightly coated in a crisp, golden batter. Very juicy and bursting with mega flavours!
