AFURI Ramen

A popular ramen shop in Japan that is famous for its refreshing yuzu ramen and grilled pork. It is said that the water used is from the wells of Mount Afuri in Kanagawa, and so that’s the name of the shop. It has been in my must-eat list and glad to find that Afuri Ramen is everywhere in Tokyo, I don’t need to purposely hunt on it. I visited the outlet in Azabujuban after a food tour in Tsukiji Market.

You will be asked if you love your soup to be “tanrei” or “maroaji”
“Tanrei” is the Afuri classic comes with a perfect balance of oil and full-flavoured chicken based soup that is infused with various seafood, konbu seaweed and vegetables. The broth is lighter. As for “maro”, it is the tanrei soup with additional chicken and vegetable oils, giving the broth a robust flavour.

Yuzu Shio Ramen (¥ 980)
Salt based soup ramen, with springy noodles served with a slice of chashu (grilled pork), half an ajitama (seasoned egg), bamboo shoots, mizuna leaves and a piece of seaweed. We opted for Tanrei. The soup is not the usual tonkotsu ramen which is thick and rich and oily. It was clean with arefreshing Yuzu citrus flavour. Super in love with it. Not to mention. The chashu was very soft and tender, and dosed with a smokiness hint as the chef grilled it over the charcoal fire. So good!

Yuzu Tsuyu Tsukemen (¥ 1060)
Served with the same toppings as Yuzu Shio Ramen and a bowl of cold yuzu dipping sauce. Tsukemen noodles were thicker, and springier. You can opt for hot or cold noodles. Go for the cold noodles for extra springiness. Dip the noodles into the concentrated dipping sauce, and then slurp it up. The noodles adsorbed the cold dipping sauce, that umami flavours was simply satisfying. Soup-wari is available at the end of the meal where you can pour it into the dipping broth.
